RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS
Changes in money, mood, routines, secrecy, and the growing urge to chase losses can all be signs that gambling is becoming something more than entertainment.
UNDERSTAND THE WHY * BREAK THE CYCLE * TAKE YOUR LIFE BACK
At some point, gambling can stop being about the money. The anticipation, near misses, wins, losses and uncertainty create repeated bursts of excitement and reward that can keep you wanting the next spin. You begin chasing not only money, but the feeling. And then there is the escape. Everything outside the machine can disappear for a while — time, problems, responsibilities, even the consequences waiting when you leave. I call that place the Machine Zone. Money simply becomes the price of staying there. Stop the Spin was created from lived experience to help people understand why they gamble, recognize the cycle that keeps them there, and find a way out.
A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER
“I know what this feels like because I lived it.”
My understanding of gambling addiction comes from research and advocacy, and from living through years of severe slot-machine addiction myself. I know the chasing, the rationalizations, the promises to stop, the financial consequences—and the powerful pull to keep playing even when you desperately want to walk away. Recovery changed what I believed was possible. I created Stop the Spin to help people understand what is happening beneath the gambling—not simply tell them to stop—and to offer practical education, lived-experience perspective, and hope without judgment.

Gambling addiction is not a failure of intelligence, character, or willpower. It can happen to ordinary, successful people—and it can grow quietly, hidden behind a life that looks completely normal from the outside. Understanding what is happening beneath the behavior is often the first step toward changing it.

UNDERSTANDING PROBLEM GAMBLING
Problem gambling is not a failure of intelligence, character, or willpower. Slot machines and other forms of gambling are carefully engineered to create repeated cycles of anticipation, uncertainty, near misses, wins, and losses — experiences that keep a person engaged far longer than they intended.
For some people, gambling eventually becomes less about winning money and more about staying in what Stop the Spin calls the "Machine Zone" — a place where time, problems, and responsibilities temporarily disappear. The machine can offer relief, escape, and stimulation all at once. Understanding that experience can help explain why walking away can become so difficult.
The machine was designed to keep you playing. You can learn how to leave it behind.
